Fitter and turner jobs in Australia for South Africans: three codes, and only one fits your work

Tips · 2026-10-21 · 10 min read

A South African fitter and turner in blue overalls sets up a steel shaft on a lathe in a mine workshop.

Fitter and turner jobs in Australia are within reach for South Africans, because Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) assesses three fitting trades for South African passport holders: Fitter (General) [323211], Fitter and Turner [323212] and Fitter – Welder [323213]. The hard part is picking the code that matches the work you really do, then showing an assessor and a sponsor how a South African apprenticeship and trade test made you a qualified artisan. If you keep crushers and conveyors running on a platinum mine near Rustenburg, or machine shafts in a Germiston workshop, read on.

Three fitting codes on TRA's list: which one describes your week?

Australian adverts say "mining fitter", "maintenance fitter" or "fitter machinist". The visa paperwork ignores the advert title: your sponsor nominates one occupation, and your skills assessment and work history must line up with that one code.

Occupation and codeUsually closest toQuestion to ask yourself
Fitter (General) [323211]Maintenance fitters who strip, repair and rebuild pumps, gearboxes, conveyors and hydraulicsIs most of my week fault-finding and repair rather than machining?
Fitter and Turner [323212]Fitters who also set up and run lathes and milling machinesDo my service letters show regular lathe and mill work?
Fitter – Welder [323213]Fitters whose repairs regularly include weldingDo my letters name welding as a core duty?

These are plain pointers, not official definitions. Check that South Africa still sits next to your code on TRA's nominated occupations and countries page, then search the code on the Home Affairs combined list of eligible skilled occupations, which shows whether it is on the CSOL, MLTSSL, STSOL or Regional Occupation List and names the assessing authority.

Choose the code your documents prove. A fitter and turner whose letters barely mention a lathe may be on firmer ground as Fitter (General) than facing hard questions later.

Your South African training, translated for an Australian assessor

An Australian assessor does not know our system by heart. The South African Government describes an artisan as a skilled worker trained through a 4-year apprenticeship that combines theory at a TVET college with practical training under a mentor, with the National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB) quality-assuring training standards across trades. Put that in a sentence at the top of your work history.

Many of us still say "red seal", but that is an everyday word, not an official name. On forms and in your CV write "trade test" and "trade certificate". The QCTO recognises you as an artisan only once you have passed the trade test and the certificate has been issued, and a recent certificate travels through several offices first:

StageWhat happensQCTO time frame
Trade Test CentreYour result and documents go to the SETAWithin 5 working days
SETAThe file moves on to NAMBWithin 10 working days
NAMBThe file goes to the QCTOWithin 21 working days
QCTOThe trade certificate is issuedWithin 3 months of trade testing, if all documents were correct

Older fitters, take note: DIRCO says the QCTO verifies trade certificates issued by the QCTO and by the former Departments of Labour, Manpower and Higher Education and Training, while N4, N5, N6 and N Diploma certificates are verified by the Department of Higher Education and Training. For emigration you can apply directly to the QCTO for a letter of authentication (a minimum fee applies; no amount is given online). Our step-by-step on getting the QCTO letter for your trade certificate covers it.

What OSAP looks for in a fitter's file

TRA's Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP) is for skilled migration applicants who work in a nominated occupation, hold a current and valid passport from a nominated country and have relevant work experience. A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) emails the outcome approximately 15 weeks after the complete documentary evidence is submitted. Our explainer on which South African trades are on TRA's OSAP list covers the program itself.

The total cost is up to $5,320 (AUD) for Pathway 1 and $2,020 (AUD) for Pathway 2: roughly R60,700 and R23,050, using the official US dollar rates of 16 Oct 2026 (the Reserve Bank of Australia's and the South African Reserve Bank's). Rates change daily, so budget with a margin.

Complete evidence for a fitter means proof of the work itself: a service letter from each employer with your title, dates, hours and duties, and payslips for the same periods. Name the equipment, from lathe and mill work to gearbox and hydraulic repairs or the welding processes you use.

Two limits are worth knowing. TRA does not award Australian qualifications, occupational registrations or occupational licences. And an assessment with no validity period shown is valid for 3 years from the date of issue, so time it to your job search.

Curious how your experience compares with the Australian trade qualification? RPLDirect's page on the Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade explains how recognition of prior learning works for it, separately from the migration assessment.

Mining fitter adverts and what a sponsor has to offer

South African trade workers already have a footprint there: the 2021 Census counted 14,292 South Africa-born people in Australia working as Technicians and Trades Workers, 11.0% of those employed.

Most sponsored fitters use the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), which lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker for a position it cannot fill with a suitably skilled Australian. In the Core Skills stream the occupation must be on the CSOL and pay must meet the Annual Market Salary Rate and be no less than AUD79,423 for nominations lodged from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. You need at least 1 year of relevant experience within the last 5 years. Where a mandatory skills assessment applies, it must be started before lodging, or the application is not valid, and within the 3 years before you apply. Our guide to the 482 visa for South Africans covers the rest.

Mines and processing plants sit mostly outside the big capitals, which brings in the subclass 494: its designated regional areas cover all of Australia except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. It asks for at least 3 years of relevant experience, a skills assessment and an age under 45 unless exempt, and holders may, if eligible, apply for permanent residence after 3 years.

Fitting overlaps with other metal and plant trades. There is a boilermaker and metal fabricator role in Perth on the board now; if your work leans towards haul trucks, see our guide to diesel mechanic jobs in Australia for South Africans; and new workshop openings appear under manufacturing jobs. For the employer's side, Employer Sponsored Jobs explains how a trade qualification can lead to employer sponsorship.

English and your CV: two things the certificate cannot do

A South African passport does not exempt you from the 482 English test (that covers Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States). At least 5 years of full-time secondary or higher study mostly taught in English does. Otherwise, IELTS needs at least 5.0 in each band, taken within 3 years before you apply; PractiseNow lets you work through practice questions before you book.

The certificate proves you qualified; your CV proves what you did next. For each job give the dates, the site, the plant you maintained and the machines you ran. Build AI CV can help you lay that out clearly for an Australian employer.

New Zealand: a second door for South African fitters

New Zealand's Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is for people with a job offer from an accredited employer. The job must be at least 30 hours a week at the market rate or more, and you need 2 years or more of relevant experience or a level 4 qualification on the New Zealand framework in the same field. It costs from NZD $1540; see Immigration New Zealand's AEWV page. There is a live fitter, turner and welder job in Christchurch, and our AEWV guide for South Africans explains the visa.

Your route from workshop to visa, step by step

  1. Read your duties over the last 5 years and choose the code your evidence supports: 323211, 323212 or 323213.
  2. Confirm the code and South Africa on TRA's list, then check the Home Affairs combined list.
  3. Get your trade certificate and apply to the QCTO for a letter of authentication.
  4. Collect a service letter from every employer you will claim and match each to payslips.
  5. Rewrite your CV around plant, machines and duties, and apply to employers who sponsor.
  6. With a serious sponsor, confirm the visa and whether an assessment applies, then start OSAP before anything is lodged.
  7. Book English if needed and time your SAPS Police Clearance Certificate: R190, approximately 15 working days, and DIRCO treats it as valid for six months.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the grander title. Fitter and Turner on a file that only shows maintenance invites questions you cannot answer with paper.
  • Writing "red seal" on forms. Use trade test and trade certificate.
  • Paying for a job offer. A 482 applicant must not have given or received a benefit for sponsorship in the past 3 years, INZ declines an AEWV if money was offered for a job, and South Africa's Department of Employment and Labour says a request to pay towards recruitment is likely a scam.
  • Treating a good outcome as a licence or visa. It is neither.

Frequently asked questions

Can a South African fitter and turner be assessed for Australia without leaving home?

Yes. TRA lists South Africa as a nominated country for its Offshore Skills Assessment Program in Fitter and Turner [323212], Fitter (General) [323211] and Fitter – Welder [323213]. You need a current South African passport, relevant work experience and complete documentary evidence.

Is a South African red seal recognised in Australia?

"Red seal" is an everyday name, and no certificate is accepted automatically. TRA's assessment compares your trade certificate and work history with Australian standards, and a positive result is not an Australian qualification or licence.

Should a mining fitter apply as Fitter (General) or Fitter and Turner?

Apply under the code your documents prove. Letters showing mostly fault-finding and plant repair point to Fitter (General); regular lathe and mill work points to Fitter and Turner. Check both on TRA's list and the Home Affairs combined list first.

How much experience do I need for a sponsored fitter job in Australia?

The 482 asks for at least 1 year of relevant work experience within the last 5 years. The regional 494 and the permanent 186 Direct Entry stream ask for at least 3 years, plus a skills assessment and an age under 45 unless exempt.

Key takeaways

  • TRA assesses all three fitting trades for South African passport holders through OSAP.
  • Pick the code your service letters and payslips prove.
  • Explain your apprenticeship, trade test and QCTO certificate in official terms.
  • The 482 needs 1 year of recent experience and pay of at least AUD79,423 in 2026-27.
  • New Zealand's AEWV is a real alternative for fitters.
