Diesel mechanic jobs in Australia for South Africans: your trade is listed, your paperwork decides

Tips · 2026-10-20 · 10 min read

Diesel mechanic jobs in Australia for South Africans start from a strong position: Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) lists Diesel Motor Mechanic [321212] among the trades it assesses for South African passport holders. What decides how fast you move is the paperwork you build at home: a clean trade certificate file, proof of every year on the tools, a police clearance, English evidence and an employer willing to sponsor you. If you service haul trucks around Rustenburg, rebuild engines on a colliery fleet near Witbank or keep plant running in the Northern Cape, this is what to prepare, and in what order.

Where a South African diesel mechanic fits in Australia's system

Australian skilled visas run on occupation codes, not job titles: an advert may say "diesel fitter" or "plant mechanic", but the nomination uses an occupation from a list. Diesel Motor Mechanic is the obvious one to check first, but compare your real duties with Fitter (General) [323211] and Motor Mechanic (General) [321211] too. Both are also on TRA's list for South Africa.

Home Affairs publishes a combined list of eligible skilled occupations. It shows whether an occupation sits on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), the MLTSSL, the STSOL or the Regional Occupation List, and names the assessing authority. Lists change, so search your occupation on the day you apply.

You will not be the first. The 2021 Census counted 49,699 South Africa-born people in Queensland and 44,889 in Western Australia.

OSAP: the assessment built for trades like yours

TRA's Offshore Skills Assessment Program is for skilled migration applicants who work in a nominated occupation, hold a current and valid passport from a nominated country and have relevant work experience. A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) does the assessment and emails the outcome approximately 15 weeks after the complete documentary evidence is submitted.

TRA puts the total cost at up to $5,320 (AUD) for Pathway 1 and $2,020 (AUD) for Pathway 2. No official rand rate for the Australian dollar is published, so here is a rough comparison using the official US dollar rates of 16 Oct 2026 (the Reserve Bank of Australia's US dollars per Australian dollar and the South African Reserve Bank's rand per US dollar): about R60,700 for Pathway 1 and about R23,050 for Pathway 2. Rates change daily, so budget with a margin.

Know what a good outcome gives you: TRA does not award Australian qualifications, occupational registrations or occupational licences, so a positive result is neither an Australian trade certificate nor a visa.

Sponsored temporary visas have their own rule. Home Affairs says some primary 482 applicants need a mandatory skills assessment, by TRA or VETASSESS depending on the occupation, and it must be started before the visa application is lodged or the application is not valid. It must also have been undertaken or commenced within the 3 years before you apply. Check the Core Skills stream page and ask your sponsor whether that applies to your occupation. Our full list of South African trades on TRA's OSAP list covers the program in more depth.

Three employer-sponsored routes, side by side

The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker for a position it cannot fill with a suitably skilled Australian. The main employer routes compare like this:

RouteWork experience Home Affairs asks forOther points to know
482, Core Skills streamAt least 1 year in the nominated occupation or a related field, within the last 5 yearsOccupation on the CSOL; pay at the market rate and no less than AUD79,423 for nominations lodged from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027; up to 4 years with your sponsor
494, regionalAt least 3 yearsSkills assessment and an age under 45 unless exempt; live, work and study only in designated regional areas for 5 years
186, Direct EntryAt least 3 yearsPermanent; CSOL occupation; positive skills assessment before lodging and under 45, unless exempt

The 494 deserves a look if Western Australia is your target. Home Affairs says designated regional areas cover all of Australia except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, so Perth and every WA mining town count as regional. Holders may, if eligible, apply for permanent residence after holding the visa for 3 years.

Later, a 482 holder's employer may be able to sponsor you for permanent residence through the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream, which is for 482 holders who have usually worked at least 2 years full time in eligible sponsored employment. Our plain guide to the Skills in Demand (482) visa for South Africans covers the rest of the 482 rules.

English: the step South Africans assume away

Home Affairs exempts 482 applicants holding passports from Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States from the English test. A South African passport is not on that list. There is a second door: applicants who completed at least 5 years of full-time study in a secondary or higher institution where most classes were in English are also exempt. If most of your classes were in Afrikaans or another language, plan for a test early.

Paperwork to sort out before you leave South Africa

OSAP assessors and sponsors work from documents. Years on a mine with no paper to show for them look, on file, like no years at all. Build the file first:

DocumentWhere it comes fromWhy it matters
Trade certificateThe QCTO, after you pass the trade testThe QCTO recognises you as an artisan only once the certificate is issued
QCTO letter of authenticationThe QCTO, on direct application for emigrationConfirms the certificate is genuine; a minimum fee applies and the QCTO gives no amount online
Service letters and payslipsEach employer you listProve the years you claim and the engines and machines you worked on
Police Clearance CertificateSAPS Criminal Record and Crime Scene ManagementR190 per application, approximately 15 working days once all documents arrive; DIRCO treats it as valid for six months
Current passportYour own, kept validOSAP needs a current and valid passport from a nominated country

If you only tested recently, the QCTO says the certificate should be issued within 3 months of trade testing when every document was submitted correctly. Our guide to trade test certificate verification and the QCTO letter walks through that request.

For the police clearance, SAPS takes a full set of fingerprints on form SAPS 91(a) if you live in South Africa. One saving is worth asking about: if your sponsor is an accredited sponsor, Home Affairs says a 482 applicant does not need police certificates from countries other than Australia when the sponsor's reference confirming good character and no criminal convictions is attached.

Your CV carries the rest. List each job's dates, duties and the plant you kept running: engine makes, haul trucks, loaders, generators, the diagnostic tools you use. If yours is a single page from years ago, Build AI CV can help you lay out that history clearly for an Australian employer.

From mine workshop to application, step by step

  1. Pick the occupation: compare your duties with Diesel Motor Mechanic [321212], Fitter (General) and Motor Mechanic (General) on TRA's nominated occupations and countries page and the Home Affairs combined list.
  2. Get your trade certificate in hand and apply to the QCTO for a letter of authentication.
  3. Collect service letters and payslips for every period you will claim, and check that part-time or casual work adds up correctly.
  4. Rewrite your CV around machines and duties, then apply to sponsoring employers.
  5. When a sponsor is serious, confirm the visa route and whether a mandatory skills assessment applies, then start OSAP through the RTO before any visa is lodged.
  6. Sort your English evidence or book a test.
  7. Time the police clearance so it is under six months old when it is needed, then lodge only when the assessment requirement is met.

On the road and in the Australian qualification

Many heavy diesel roles involve moving or road-testing trucks. Queensland's recognised countries list for licence transfers does not include South Africa, so a South African driver must pass a road rules test and a practical driving test to get a Queensland licence. If a role asks for a heavy vehicle licence, plan for those tests.

Some mechanics also want to see how their experience lines up with the Australian trade qualification itself. RPLDirect's page on the Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology explains how recognition of prior learning works for that qualification.

Right now the board has an automotive panel beater and assembler role in Albury and a boilermaker and metal fabricator role in Perth, and the same paperwork logic applies to them.

Common mistakes

  • Paying for a sponsored job. A 482 applicant must not have asked for, offered, received or provided a benefit in return for sponsorship in the past 3 years. South Africa's Department of Employment and Labour says a request to pay towards recruitment is likely to be a scam.
  • Lodging before the assessment has started. Where a mandatory skills assessment applies, a 482 application lodged before it was started is not valid.
  • Claiming years you cannot prove. OSAP's clock only starts on complete evidence.
  • Letting the police clearance go stale. DIRCO only legalises originals not older than six months.
  • Assuming the English exemption. A South African passport does not give one on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Is Diesel Motor Mechanic on TRA's OSAP list for South Africans?

Yes. Trades Recognition Australia lists South Africa as a nominated country for its Offshore Skills Assessment Program in Diesel Motor Mechanic [321212], alongside trades such as Fitter (General) and Motor Mechanic (General). Lists change, so confirm it on TRA's page on the day you apply.

How long does OSAP take, and what does it cost?

TRA says the RTO emails the outcome approximately 15 weeks after the complete documentary evidence is submitted. The total cost is up to $5,320 (AUD) for Pathway 1 and $2,020 (AUD) for Pathway 2, and the program page explains which pathway applies.

Do I need an English test with a South African passport?

Probably, unless another exemption fits. Home Affairs exempts 482 applicants holding passports from Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States, and South Africa is not on that list. Applicants with at least 5 years of full-time secondary or higher study where most classes were in English are also exempt.

Can I start work as a diesel mechanic in Australia once my assessment is positive?

No. TRA does not award Australian qualifications, registrations or licences, and an assessment is not a visa. You still need a sponsoring employer and a granted visa, and a 482 holder may work only in the nominated occupation for the nominating business.

Should I pay someone to find me a sponsored diesel mechanic job?

No. Subclass 482 applicants must not have asked for, offered, received or provided a benefit in return for sponsorship in the past 3 years. South Africa's Department of Employment and Labour says a request to pay towards recruitment is likely to be a scam.
