Mental Health Registered Nurse

Healthcare · Sydney NSW, Australia · Full-Time · $80,000/yr

Inpatient wards and community teams across New South Wales are short of experienced mental health nurses. One large healthcare provider is hiring for 2026: several full-time posts as a Mental Health Registered Nurse or Mental Health Clinician, based around Sydney.

You would work in a mixed team of doctors, nurses and allied staff, caring for patients and the people close to them. The employer mentions sponsorship, help with relocation and a pathway to permanent residency for these posts, plus salary packaging, ongoing training, a supportive culture and room to move up.

South African nurses should check AHPRA registration steps early and have certified copies of their qualifications and nursing council records ready, as registration paperwork takes careful preparation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Nurse people living with mental illness, giving care that is kind, skilled and built around the person
  • Sit down with patients for full psychiatric and mental health assessments, then write, start and review a care plan for each one
  • Chart how each patient is going and keep the clinical record up to date and correct
  • Give medicines and treatments the way clinical guidelines set out, and step in with crisis support and therapy when someone needs it
  • Work side by side with psychiatrists, medical officers and other health professionals in case reviews and in planning care and discharge
  • Teach and support patients, their families and carers as they plan recovery
  • Keep patients safe and stay within mental health law and clinical standards, protecting privacy and acting ethically and professionally
  • Help improve quality across the service and keep learning through ongoing education and development

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent recognised qualification
  • Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse or eligibility to obtain registration
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in mental health nursing or mental health clinical practice
  • Knows psychiatric assessment and the principles of mental health care well, and has a sound grasp of the Australian mental health legislation and clinical practice standards that apply
  • Communicates clearly and builds rapport, fitting in well with a multidisciplinary healthcare team
  • Makes sound clinical decisions, solves problems and is committed to patient-centred care of high quality
  • Postgraduate qualification in Mental Health Nursing will be highly regarded
  • Ready to move to Australia
