Care Assistant

Showering, dressing, mealtimes, getting from bed to chair, a bit of company: this Melbourne role is about helping older residents with everyday living while keeping their dignity, independence, safety, comfort and quality of life front of mind.

Aged care providers across Australia are recruiting dependable Aged Care Workers and Personal Care Assistants who hold suitable qualifications. They look at the whole picture, from qualifications and practical care experience to communication and how you conduct yourself at work. Your credentials can be assessed so you are matched with providers that fit your experience. When police checks come up, a clearance certificate from the South African Police Service is the document to request.

Key Responsibilities

  • Care for each resident in a person-centred way, with compassion and respect
  • Support residents with showering, toileting, dressing, grooming and personal hygiene
  • Help people move safely, including transfers and the use of mobility equipment
  • Assist at mealtimes with eating, drinking and any feeding needs
  • Spend time with residents for company and emotional support, and help them through daily routines and activities that mean something to them
  • Carry out each person's care plan and stick to workplace procedures
  • Watch for, and pass on, any shift in a resident's physical, emotional or behavioural state
  • Write up care notes and keep records and documentation correct
  • Use safe manual handling, infection control and workplace safety practices
  • Talk regularly with nurses, allied health staff, fellow carers and families
  • Honour each person's privacy, dignity, cultural background and preferences, and encourage independence and involvement in day-to-day life so the home stays safe, supportive and respectful

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Holds a relevant aged care, healthcare, nursing assistance or personal care qualification
  • Preferred: earlier work in aged care, residential care or disability support
  • Understands how person-centred care works in practice
  • English good enough to communicate with residents and at work, plus strong people and communication skills
  • Compassionate, dependable and professional, able to form respectful relationships with residents and the care team
  • Comfortable working to care plans, procedures and workplace standards
  • Prepared to undergo the required police checks, screening and health assessments
  • Open to different shifts, weekends included when required
  • Offshore applicants may be considered for employer sponsorship (subject to eligibility); onshore applicants with suitable Australian work rights are welcome to apply
