Staying On to Work After Study in New Zealand: The November 2026 Graduate Visa Shake-Up Explained

News · 2026-09-23 · 4 min read

Studying in New Zealand, or thinking about it from South Africa? Two visa changes start on November 16, 2026, and they decide whether you can stay on and work once your course ends. One is a brand-new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa. The other is a wider Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV). Between them, thousands more graduates get a lawful way into New Zealand jobs. Here is what each route asks of you, and the dates you cannot afford to miss.

The gap these changes fill

Many people who finished a diploma or certificate in New Zealand were stuck. They had the qualification and the drive, but no work visa matched their level of study. These changes go straight at that problem. They also move applications onto Immigration New Zealand's upgraded Immigration Online system.

So whether you finish soon or have only just enrolled, read on. Your plan after study may hinge on this.

Route 1: the new short-term visa

The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is a fresh category for graduates whose qualification used to leave them with no work visa at all. It gives up to six months of open work rights. Use that time to look for work, build New Zealand experience and, if things go well, move across to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).

To be eligible, you need:

  • a qualification at level 5 to 7 on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF)
  • at least 24 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand
  • no existing eligibility for a PSWV
  • evidence of at least NZD 5,000 in funds you can access
  • no earlier grant of this visa or of a PSWV
  • approval from MFAT or Education New Zealand if you studied on the New Zealand Scholarship Programme (where relevant)
  • medical and chest X-ray clearance if your length of stay calls for it

Limits on this visa: graduates of English-language, foundation and bridging courses cannot apply. You cannot own a business while you hold it. Your family cannot be added as dependants of the visa holder, although they may apply on their own as visitors or under another category.

Watch the deadline. You must apply within three months of your student visa ending. That means anyone whose student visa ran out before August 16, 2026 has already lost the chance. The grant is also one-time only: no renewal and no second attempt.

Route 2: a wider door into the PSWV

The PSWV has been around for a while; what changes is who can get it. If you complete a NZQCF level 7 Graduate Diploma, you can now qualify, as long as you also hold a bachelor's degree. That degree can come from New Zealand or anywhere else, and it does not matter when you earned it.

What you must show:

  • full-time study for the whole Graduate Diploma, with no cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning
  • a genuine bachelor's degree certificate stating the qualification type and the institution
  • an official academic transcript

Good news on paperwork: a bachelor's degree from overseas will not need a separate International Qualification Assessment. Immigration New Zealand can still check that it is authentic.

How long you get depends on the length of your Graduate Diploma, up to a maximum of one year. Again, it is granted once only. If you have had a PSWV before, you cannot get another, even with a newer qualification.

One real advantage over Route 1: PSWV holders can bring a partner and dependent children, who come on their own visas.

Lodging online after the switch-over

From November 16, 2026, every application for either visa goes through the upgraded Immigration Online platform. It is meant to give better tracking and rules that match current policy. Paper PSWV applications are being dropped. Anything lodged on or before November 15, 2026 is still processed the old way. After that, it is online or nothing.

What to do if you are planning from South Africa

Timing is everything here. The windows are tight (three, six or twelve months after your visa ends, depending on the route and your course), each visa can only be granted once, and eligibility often rests on choices made long before graduation, such as studying full-time and how your course sits on the NZQCF.

If study is your way to work in New Zealand from South Africa, check your course level and study load before you enrol, not after. Keep your degree certificate and transcripts ready, and get certified copies when they are requested. If a partner and children will travel with you, remember the two routes treat family differently. Map your visa options now so a deadline does not catch you out.
