Underground Heavy Diesel Fitter
Trade · Sydney NSW, Australia · Full-Time · $59/hr
Spent years fixing tractors, dozers, crushers or road trucks? Those skills carry straight into underground mining, and an employer in New South Wales wants to hear from you.
Qualified mechanics and fitters are needed, and the test is simple: show the heavy-equipment work you have genuinely done. Farm machinery, earthmoving, civil, quarry, heavy vehicle or mine backgrounds all fit. Diagnosing faults, completing repairs and keeping complex systems going safely matter more than the names on your CV.
No FIFO here. You live in a regional NSW community and work residential rosters, which vary by site but are built around regular days at home. Mzansi fitters with plant experience should keep their trade papers ready.
Key Responsibilities
- Keep heavy mobile equipment in working order in harsh conditions, from underground loaders and haul trucks to drill rigs and other specialised units
- Check machines over and pick up wear or damage early, before it turns into a major breakdown
- Trace problems in engines, hydraulics, transmissions, drivelines and brakes, reading technical manuals, drawings and hydraulic schematics as you go
- Replace parts and complete big component change-outs, rebuilds and overhauls
- Respond to machines that have failed and return them to service safely
- Stick to the preventive maintenance schedule set for the site
- Log each repair, service and defect you deal with
- Report equipment issues and upcoming maintenance needs to your supervisor
- Complete pre-start inspections and obey isolation and permit procedures
- Work as a safe, reliable member of a maintenance team where the risks are high

- Solid working knowledge of hydraulics, engines, transmissions, drivelines and braking systems
- Underground mining experience: beneficial but not mandatory
- Caterpillar, Sandvik or Epiroc experience: highly regarded
- Experience on heavy equipment from farming (agriculture), earthmoving, civil, quarrying or heavy transport will be considered
- Current driver's licence
- Happy on a roster and able to settle into residential mine life
- Talks clearly and pulls their weight in a crew, while also working solo under the established safety procedures
