Spray Painter & Paintshop Prepper Assistant

Good refinishing work speaks for itself, and this Rodney, Auckland paintshop wants people who can show it. It is hiring an Automotive Spray Painter with real experience, plus a Paintshop Prepper / Assistant, both on a permanent, full-time basis.

For the painter, the job is all about even, high-quality finishes, precise colour work and efficient refinishing. The prepper / assistant spot fits someone who has done some prep before, or a motivated newcomer keen to grow trade skills, with the chance of working up to an apprenticeship.

Each applicant's background and past jobs get reviewed during hiring to make sure the fit is genuine. If you have worked in a South African body shop, gather proof of that employment early.

Key Responsibilities

  • As the painter, handle automotive refinishing and spray work, including blending and getting colours to match
  • As the painter, prep cars and panels so they are fit for a professional coat
  • As the painter, produce consistently high-quality paintwork and inspect each finished job so it meets the shop's quality bar
  • As the painter, stay detail-focused through both the prep and the spraying stages
  • As the painter, work at a pace that keeps up with the workshop's production deadlines
  • As the painter, operate independently while contributing to how productive the whole team is
  • In both roles, keep tools, equipment and the paintshop tidy and organised, and stick to the shop's safety, health and quality rules
  • In the prep role, sand, mask and otherwise prepare vehicles, panels and other surfaces before refinishing
  • In the prep role, assist with priming and getting surfaces ready
  • In the prep role, support the painters through each workshop day and help the paintshop run efficiently
  • In the prep role, take on general paintshop duties whenever asked
  • In the prep role, pick up refinishing know-how and technical skills through hands-on work
  • In the prep role, aim for a potential apprenticeship or other career progression

Requirements & Eligibility

  • For Spray Painter applicants: proven hands-on automotive spray painting, plus demonstrated skill in refinishing and colour-matching
  • Produces finishes that look professional and stay consistent, with a keen eye for detail
  • Relevant experience with the processes used to prepare and refinish vehicles
  • For Prepper / Assistant applicants: earlier paint prep work is advantageous; knowing how to sand, mask and prime is beneficial
  • Works quickly and hits production deadlines
  • Dependable, punctual and driven, bringing a solid work ethic and a can-do attitude
  • Gets on well in a team setting
  • Open to picking up fresh technical skills
  • Candidates must be able to prove their work experience is genuine and relevant
  • Overseas applicants must satisfy whichever New Zealand employment and visa requirements apply
  • Suitably qualified overseas candidates can be sponsored
