Sous Chef

Most shifts here wrap up around 3:30pm. The week is 38 hours over five days, built mainly around breakfast-to-lunch trade, which is rare for a kitchen role with real responsibility.

The venue in Clarence Park, Adelaide serves a mix of deli, café and sandwich-style food, so there is plenty of variety and space for your own ideas. The owners want an experienced Chef de Partie or a Sous Chef on the way up who can work alone, take ownership and push the kitchen forward. You will report to the Head Chef and run the kitchen yourself during service when needed.

Expect a 6-month trial period. Keep your chef references and any culinary certificates ready to share.

Key Responsibilities

  • Back the Head Chef so the kitchen runs smoothly every day, and step in to run service yourself when required
  • Run your own section with little supervision and stay calm and quick when it gets busy
  • Cook to the set recipes and standards, keeping flavour, plating and portions consistent and food presented to a high standard
  • Finish prep and mise en place before service starts
  • Bring forward ideas for dishes, specials and better ways of working
  • Watch ingredient use to cut down on waste, and help with stock control and kitchen orders
  • Meet food safety and hygiene requirements
  • Keep every kitchen area clean, tidy and ready for service
  • Talk clearly with the Head Chef and the rest of the team
  • Guide less experienced team members when needed
  • Own the standard of the food from the start of service to the end

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Previous experience as a Chef de Partie, Sous Chef or in a similar commercial kitchen role, gained in a café, restaurant, bistro, deli or comparable setting
  • Strong cooking, prep and kitchen organisation skills, and confident running a section on your own
  • Proven ability to follow recipes and turn out consistent results
  • Close attention to food quality, presentation and detail
  • Stays organised and calm through busy services
  • Dependable and reliable in how you work
  • Strong communicator and team player with a positive attitude and a readiness to take responsibility
  • Leadership potential and the confidence to make decisions when required
  • Relevant culinary qualifications are advantageous
  • Commitment to full-time employment and willingness to complete the required 6-month trial period
