Marine Technician

Some days you are in the workshop, some days at a customer's mooring, and some days out on the water for a sea trial. This Marine Technician / Outboard Motor Mechanic job is in Thames-Coromandel, Waikato, New Zealand, with an established marine service business.
You will own the diagnosis, servicing and repair of marine engines, from mechanical and electrical work to commissioning and upkeep, as part of an experienced technical team. Modern marine tech and ongoing training are part of the package.

Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose faults in marine engine mechanical, electrical, fuel and cooling systems using computerised diagnostic gear and maker-specific software
- Service and maintain petrol outboards and other marine power systems, including scheduled and preventative work
- Repair engines, replace parts and do overhauls, stripping, inspecting and rebuilding engines and components
- Spot mechanical defects and decide on the right repair
- Tune engines, then test and assess their performance
- Find and fix problems in marine starting, charging and electrical systems
- Service and repair MerCruiser sterndrive and inboard systems as required
- Fit and set up outboards, controls, gauges and wiring, plus marine electronics and accessories
- Do pre-delivery checks and commissioning, and run sea trials to confirm engine and system performance
- Go out to customer sites for mobile servicing and repairs when needed
- Keep job sheets, service records and technical documents accurate, following manufacturer specs and repair procedures
- Work safely and tidily in the workshop and deliver high-quality work on every job
Requirements & Eligibility
- Relevant NZQF Level 4 marine, mechanical or related trade qualification, or an equivalent overseas qualification
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience working with internal-combustion engines
- Real hands-on time on outboard or marine engines
- Proven at diagnosing engine faults and fixing them properly
- Strong practical know-how in engine servicing and replacing mechanical parts
- Experience with marine electrical and charging systems
- Can use computerised diagnostic equipment and follow manufacturer service manuals and technical specs
- Mercury outboard experience is highly regarded
- MerCruiser experience is highly regarded
- Knowledge of SmartCraft and DTS systems is advantageous
- Marine manufacturer training or certification is an advantage
- Good at troubleshooting and solving problems
- Works on your own and owns each job, while adding value to an experienced team
- Committed to safety and quality work
- Full driver’s licence is preferred
- Must meet relevant New Zealand employment and immigration requirements; employer sponsorship available for suitably qualified overseas candidates
