Koojan, in the Northam and Wheatbelt area of Western Australia, is the base for this senior farm leadership job. You would oversee cropping, pasture, fodder and irrigation on a large scale and help set where the whole operation goes next, backed by an established agricultural business with experienced teams in farming, agronomy and livestock.
The employer is after a verifiable track record in big farming operations, plus the leadership, planning and commercial sense to manage significant assets with a lot of autonomy. Expect to be measured on productivity, how well the land is used, efficiency and financial performance.
On offer: a base salary of approximately $150,000, a new dual-cab, a five-bedroom house on the farm and bonuses tied to performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Take the lead on farming across large agricultural holdings, managing and growing a team of supervisors, overseers and machine operators
- Set plans for each season that balance output goals, the resources on hand and conditions on the farm
- Run the crop program (oats, barley, wheat, vetch and irrigated sorghum) together with pasture, fodder and irrigation work
- Control the yearly budget, forecasting, expenditure and capital spend, and monitor yields, pasture outcomes, productivity and running costs
- Collaborate with the agronomy team to build soil health, establish pastures and lift crop results, using sustainable land and soil practices
- Line up fodder with what the livestock and feed side of the business requires
- Weigh up and deliver land improvement and productivity initiatives, and drive capital projects that raise efficiency and add asset value over time
- Use GPS, precision ag and digital farm-management technology, and let the data inform plans and agricultural decisions
- Look after staffing plans, training, performance reviews and staff development, with safety, accountability and steady improvement built into the culture
- Oversee contractors, suppliers and outside agricultural services, and communicate effectively with the in-house teams
- Be accountable for how the operation performs, both operationally and financially
Requirements & Eligibility
- Senior-level background in farming or agricultural operations that you can demonstrate, having run cropping, livestock or mixed enterprises
- Practical, in-depth understanding of production systems on large-scale agricultural properties
- Demonstrated grasp of agronomy, weed control and the use of chemicals
- Has handled farm budgeting, forecasting, production planning and managing costs
- Knows modern farming practice and agricultural machinery well
- Has used GPS, precision agriculture and digital farm-management systems
- Proven at leading and building agricultural teams
- Makes sound commercial and operational decisions
- Able to show a record of responsible farm management with measurable outcomes
- Plans well, communicates clearly and manages stakeholders effectively
- Highly regarded: tertiary study in Agriculture, Agribusiness or a related discipline
- Advantageous: ChemCert or an equivalent qualification
- A current driver's licence is required; an HR or MC licence is also advantageous
- Must be able to satisfy applicable Australian employment and visa requirements
