Construction Technician/Assistant

Mixing and pouring concrete in the morning, helping the roofers or plumbers after lunch, and keeping the site safe throughout: this Construction Technician / Assistant job in Otago covers a lot of ground. You will back up qualified tradespeople on houses, commercial buildings and infrastructure in New Zealand.

Key Responsibilities

  • Give hands-on support to skilled tradespeople and supervisors on residential, commercial and infrastructure jobs
  • Set each site up with the right materials, tools and gear, and clear away construction waste so the site stays orderly
  • Prepare, mix, pour, spread and finish concrete with the crew
  • Assist the carpenters, bricklayers, roofers, floor layers, plasterers, painters, glaziers, plumbers and drainlayers
  • Dig, trench, level and shift materials during site preparation
  • Help fit pipes, fittings, drainage parts and other building systems, as well as heating, cooling and ventilation runs
  • Measure, cut, secure and position steel bars, mesh and other reinforcing
  • Handle hand tools and basic power tools the safe way the site expects
  • Put up temporary structures, safety barriers and fenced work areas
  • Report hazards, defects or problems to your supervisor straight away
  • Stick to health and safety rules and wear the right PPE
  • Pull together with the crew to hit deadlines and quality targets, and take on any other support work asked of you

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Minimum 12 months of construction industry experience with proven practical exposure; you must be able to demonstrate real site skills and the responsibilities you held
  • Fit enough for hard manual work in demanding conditions
  • Knows how to work safely and follows site procedures
  • Comfortable with basic hand and power tools
  • Takes instructions from supervisors and fits into a crew
  • Shows up every day with a good attitude, ready to help
  • Keen to learn New Zealand construction standards and what New Zealand employers expect
