Quality Assurance Officer

Manufacturing · Auckland, New Zealand · Full-Time · Discussed at interview

Here is the deal. An Auckland maker of food and dietary supplements needs a Quality Assurance Officer who has kept quality systems running on an actual production floor. The plant produces dairy and nutritional powders, powdered drinks, sachets, hard capsules and tablets.

You will need a strong handle on quality management systems and on New Zealand rules for food manufacturing and export. The employer says plainly that laboratory-only experience may not cut it.

Mzansi applicants: get a SAPS police clearance certificate sorted early in case one is requested, and keep certified copies of your qualifications on hand if they are asked for.

Key Responsibilities

  • You keep RMP, GMP and NP3 in good order and keep improving them.
  • You make sure production sticks to MPI requirements, the approved RMP, internal procedures and the applicable OMARs, and you run compliance checks on storage, production, traceability, packing, export, hygiene and product release.
  • When an audit or verification visit is coming, whether from MPI, a customer, a third party or a recognised agency, you coordinate it and get ready: paperwork reviewed, records organised, site readiness checked and departments lined up.
  • You set up the internal audit programme, roll it out, audit solo, write it up and chase the findings.
  • You go over warehouse, monitoring, product release, cleaning, manufacturing and packing records.
  • When things go wrong, you manage it: complaints from customers, deviations, products that do not conform, root cause investigations and CAPA.
  • You join mock recalls, validation activities, risk assessments and traceability exercises.
  • On exports, you work the MPI E-cert system for applications and documents, test eligibility against OMAR requirements, and prepare and review Transfers, Eligibility Declarations, Health Certificates and the records behind them.
  • You sign off packaging materials, finished products, raw materials and intermediate products, book testing at accredited third-party laboratories, go through results, follow up the non-conforming ones, and check that labels, specifications, manufacturing documents and formulations are accurate and compliant.
  • You help approve suppliers, review their paperwork and watch their performance, train warehouse, packing, production and other staff on food safety, GMP and quality systems, and back the QA Manager on regulatory, quality, export compliance and food safety work.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • A qualification in Quality Management, Food Safety, Food Science, Microbiology or a related discipline.
  • At least two years doing quality systems or QA work in New Zealand food manufacturing, with earlier time in a similar operation such as sachets, dairy products, capsules, tablets, nutritional powders, dietary supplements or other export food products.
  • Sound knowledge of New Zealand RMP requirements, verification, record review and ongoing maintenance included, and good working knowledge of food safety management systems, GMP and RMP.
  • Knowledge of the OMAR requirements that apply, plus practical time on MPI's E-cert system.
  • Has coordinated recognised agency, MPI, third-party or customer audits, and can show they plan internal audits, run them independently, write the reports and follow up corrective actions.
  • Has managed root cause investigations, CAPA, complaints, deviations and non-conformances.
  • Reads and writes English strongly, well enough for standards, regulations, export documentation and audit reports, and can communicate in Mandarin for day-to-day operational coordination.
  • Proficient on Word, Outlook and Excel from Microsoft.
  • Preferred: experience with Eligibility Declarations, Health Certificate applications and Transfers; internal auditor training or qualification; experience in a dairy or animal-product RMP manufacturing facility; knowledge of food export requirements for Hong Kong, China or other overseas markets; involvement in recognised agency audits, whether MPI, AsureQuality or others; knowledge of MPI export certification and dairy export processes.
