Diesel Motor Mechanic

Heavy trucks, diesel engines, hydraulics and wiring faults: that is the mix waiting for an experienced Heavy Vehicle Diesel Mechanic in Hamilton, Waikato. The employer wants someone with sharp diagnostic ability and solid technical know-how.
You will split your time between the workshop and outdoor jobs, in a team that takes safety and professionalism seriously. Expect a pre-employment drug and alcohol test, a medical and a Ministry of Justice check along the way.
If you are a qualified diesel mechanic from South Africa, have your trade certificate and licence copies ready, as New Zealand employers usually want to see proof of your trade.
Key Responsibilities
- Service, maintain and inspect heavy diesel vehicles on schedule, including preventative maintenance
- Find complex mechanical faults and repair diesel engines and mechanical parts
- Troubleshoot hydraulic systems and track down and fix electrical faults
- Use vehicle diagnostic gear and software to pinpoint problems and repair them properly
- Keep maintenance paperwork accurate, logging every repair and service done
- Follow health and safety requirements and keep the workspace tidy and professional, both in the workshop and outdoors
Requirements & Eligibility
- Minimum 2 years' heavy vehicle diesel mechanic experience
- A full Class 1 driver's licence; a Class 4 licence is highly regarded
- Strong diesel mechanical knowledge with excellent fault-finding and diagnostic skills
- Experience with hydraulic systems and vehicle electrical systems
- Confident with diagnostic tools and software, and good at documentation and record-keeping
- Able to work on your own and in a team, with strong communication skills and a safety-first attitude
- Physically fit for mechanical work and able to work in both workshop and outdoor conditions
- Must successfully complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing
- Must successfully complete a medical assessment
- Must pass a Ministry of Justice check
- Existing New Zealand work rights required or eligibility for AEWV
